I think I found it rather uplifiting in a way. The situation is bleak but there's nothing about Denisovich that is crushed by his circumstances. No whinging.

You might want a break from the bleakness for now but further down the line I'd recommend Moments of Reprieve by Primo Levi. it is a (thin!) book of short stories about brief events during his stay in Auschwitz that made it possible to on surviving.

But maybe something a little jollier is next on your dance card?mooncalfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01150392487909235200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4530190092034193112.post-51889887051114900962011-02-04T21:17:54.033+00:002011-02-04T21:17:54.033+00:00I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Think I've read it about 5 times dice although his other works are somewhat longer and definitely harder to get a grip with.Helenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03526472479516139768noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4530190092034193112.post-11527536929358415452011-02-04T19:43:43.915+00:002011-02-04T19:43:43.915+00:00Thanks for this review - I want to get hold of a c...Thanks for this review - I want to get hold of a copy and read it now. Incidentally, you might be interested in a film I saw recently called " The Way Back". It's about a group of prisoners trying to escape from a gulag. It was relentless but also so inspiring. It's based on a true story.agirlinwinterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176271184746250169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4530190092034193112.post-75944610690109799522011-02-04T18:37:33.046+00:002011-02-04T18:37:33.046+00:00It certainly does sound grim, and that's just ...It certainly does sound grim, and that's just the 'thin fish water'! But surely grim and thin are quite a good combination.

I'm on a promise to myself not to buy fiction (apart from my two favourite authors) this year and to read what I have on the shelves or go to the library. I might just have to borrow this one. xPinkCatJohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12323032970862942723noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4530190092034193112.post-91188539944182653002011-02-04T16:51:53.962+00:002011-02-04T16:51:53.962+00:00Well it sounds good but very definitely grim. The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie is definitely a modern classic and it has the benefit of being nice and short as well as rather good. Or some of the original Penguin list surely count as classics now - bit of Evelyn Waugh or P.G. Wodehouse perhaps?Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11337968500120821387noreply@blogger.com
